While the whole world is thinking lithium-ion, Hyundai has already conceptualized the idea of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles way back!
For those, who have no idea of how a fuel cell works, here it is, explained to you! The hydrogen fuel cell works on a basic concept, the hydrogen, and oxygen is put together in a fuel cell. The fuel-cell combines them, producing electricity and emits water (water vapor) as a by-product. This electricity powers the motor.
Hyundai Nexo is a new cross-over powered by the hydrogen fuel cells. A 5 seater driven by an electric motor that delivers 395 Nm of Torque and 120 kW power.
Hyundai has developed advanced driver assistance systems such as Lane Following Assist (LFA) & Highway Driving Assist (HDA). Hyundai also has included cool features like the auto flush door handles, blind-spot view monitor (BVM), etc.
Two things, one would like to boast about Hyundai Nexo is the Remote Smart Park Assist (RSPA) & the 5-minute fuel refilling time! Hyundai promises range over 600 km also. Nobody would have thought of a car that can purify the air and also be a mobile power plant - an electric outlet to charge your basic electricity needs! Hyundai brings these features to you.
What puts Hyundai one step ahead of others is its ability to visualize the future.
Currently, there are only two choices to power an electric vehicle. One is the conventional lithium-ion batteries and the other one is the hydrogen fuel cells. Fuel cell electric vehicles have many advantages over lithium-ion battery-powered vehicles. Here are some of the advantages;
1. Because of the high energy density and lightweight nature of hydrogen, compressed hydrogen and fuel cells can power cars for extended ranges without adding much weight as in the case of Li-ion batteries.
2. Clean emission (water vapor)
3. Higher range compared with Li-ion battery vehicles
4. Low refueling time
Talking about other fuel cells in the market, there are many concept FCEVs developed so far by almost all the major players in the market. Commercial competition to Hyundai's Nexo may include Toyota Mirai, Honda Clarity. Hyundai Nexo leads over the other two in terms of utility, power delivery, passenger capacity, suspension & handling, traction control, safety, features and much more. On the technological front, Nexo is rather superior.
However, the challenges in setting up Hydrogen stations, transportation & storage, economic viability needs to be looked into. While the world is still at the beginning of the transition phase from fossil fuels to electric, there is a long way to go.
Hydrogen is abundant, but not readily available. To extract hydrogen from its compounds such as methane, it again requires a lot of energy. The end to end production of hydrogen still remails a challenge. The same is the case for an electric vehicle. The electricity that drives electric cars is mostly generated from fossil fuels. The feasibility of electric vehicles remains a topic to debate about.
Despite all these facts, the Hyundai Nexo is the most celebrated FCEV in Hyundai's line up as this marks the beginning of FCEVs on a commercial scale. Hyundai Nexo also marked its presence in the Auto Expo 2020 in Delhi, this February.
Hyundai has emerged into a future-ready smart mobility provider rather than a mere car maker. This has been possible because of the company's strong philosophy that emphasizes developing innovative mobility solutions, bringing a new perspective to automobiles, and developing human-centric, eco-friendly technology and services.
What is the future?
The future awaits with new advancements in electric vehicle technology. The new technologies could cover up the limitations of electric vehicles that persist today. The new technologies rather would change the definition of mobility. Hyundai is in pace with this fast-moving world and definitely, investing in hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles makes Hyundai one step ahead to future mobility!
